1. Prep Your Natural Hair
Before applying your wig, make sure your natural hair is clean and flat. For short hair, brush it back and secure with gel or bobby pins. If your hair is longer hair, braid it into cornrows or wrap it flat against your scalp and secure with pins or a wig cap.
2. Choose the Right Wig Cap
Learning how to wear a wig includes one of the most fundamental steps which is choosing the right type of wig cap. So choose one that creates a smooth base for your wigs and helps keep it secure. Nylon or mesh caps work well for most beginners. Place the wig cap over your hair, ensuring all strands are tucked underneath.
3. Position the Wig Correctly
Hold your wig at the front hairline with both hands. Place it on your head, aligning the front edge with your natural hairline. Adjust the back and sides so the ear tabs rest just above your ears.
4. Secure the Wig
Most wigs come with adjustable straps or combs inside the cap. Tighten the straps for a snug fit, and use the combs to anchor the wig into your natural hair or wig cap. For extra security, you can use wig glue or tape along the hairline.
5. Style and Blend
Once the wig is in place, gently style it with your fingers or a wig brush. Blend the hairline by pulling out a few strands of your natural hair (if applicable). You can also use a bit of concealer along the part to create a realistic look.
6. Adjust the Wig Accordingly
It’s very important that your wig fits comfortably on your head. A good way to test your wig out to make sure it doesn’t fall off is by shaking your head. If it feels like it slipping or moving around on your head, you probably need to add more clips, glue or add more tightness to the adjustable straps.
Be Confident in Your New Hair
Learning how to wear a wig takes patience. The more you practice, the more comfortable and confident you’ll become in adjusting and styling your wig. By following these steps, you can fit a wig properly and enjoy a flawless, natural look every time!
