How To Get Your Mindset Ready To Start A Fast

Starting a Fast with Marcey Grant at Look Beyond Beauty

They are many conversations, rules, outlines, and strategies to start a diet or other lifestyle changes. However, there is not much talk about getting our mindset ready when starting a fast. In fact, there are no discussions about the space between the beginning and the ending of a fast.

Starting a Fast

Perhaps the reason for not getting our mindset ready before starting a fast is that we are afraid we may not follow through. Imagine if we knew ahead of time the work it will take to accomplish a goal, succeed, the ups and downs, and how many times we will start and stop. We probably will get tired just thinking about it and never start.

And what if we knew precisely how every moment of our day will unfold in this lifetime. For instance, the step-by-step process. Even the complete details of each day from the moment we wake up to sleep time. This type of thinking can be exhausting.

Fasting can be a powerful way to reset your body, improve health, and even sharpen your focus. But while many people prepare their meals and schedules in advance, they often overlook the most important part of a successful fast—mindset. Getting your mind ready before you begin can make the difference between giving up early and completing your fast with confidence.

Achieving Results

As a Beauty & Wellness Coach, I coach people on how to achieve results by providing an outline of do’s and and don’ts, as well as a comprehensive plan. Whether it’s starting a fast or other lifestyle changes, every client has a beginning and an ending to their process.

While it can be both exciting and sometimes scary starting something new, the key is having the right support. Since there’s always the possibility that you won’t continue, having professional support gives you that edge for encouragement and staying power.

Beginning and continuing with a goal are two different processes. So, when you reach a threshold, it will require a different magnitude of dynamics to continue. But the great thing about starting on a health journey, is that you don’t have to do it alone.

1. Define Your Why

Before starting, take time to clearly identify your purpose. Do you want to fast for spiritual reasons, improved health, or to build self-discipline? Writing down your reasons helps anchor your decision, giving you something to come back to when cravings or doubts arise.

2. Start With Small Wins

f you’ve never fasted before, jumping straight into an extended fast may feel overwhelming. Instead, ease in by trying shorter fasting windows, such as intermittent fasting. Or gradually reducing snacking. These small wins build mental strength and give you confidence for longer fasts.

3. Visualize Success

Your brain responds strongly to imagery. Spend a few minutes each day visualizing yourself moving calmly through your fasting period, feeling strong, focused, and at peace. This mental rehearsal prepares you to respond positively when hunger or temptation shows up.

4. Shift Your Self-Talk

What you tell yourself matters. Replace negative thoughts like “I can’t do this” with empowering affirmations such as “My body is capable, and I’m in control.” Reframing challenges as opportunities strengthens resilience and makes fasting a mental victory.

5. Prepare for Triggers

Mindset readiness also means anticipating difficulties. Think ahead about what might challenge you like social events, boredom, or cravings, and plan responses in advance. For example, you might sip herbal tea, go for a walk, or journal to stay focused.

6. Stay Flexible, Not Rigid

Fasting should feel empowering, not punishing. If you approach it with harsh rules, you may set yourself up for frustration. Instead, adopt a flexible mindset: if you stumble, learn from it rather than quitting altogether. Progress, not perfection, is the true goal.

7. Connect With Your Deeper Motivation

When fasting feels tough, connect with the bigger picture. Whether it’s clarity, discipline, or improved health, remind yourself of the deeper purpose behind your effort. This perspective transforms short-term discomfort into meaningful growth.

Final Thoughts

Preparing your mindset is just as important as preparing your body for fasting. By defining your “why,” practicing visualization, shifting your self-talk, and planning ahead, you’ll build the mental strength needed to start—and finish—your fast with success.
